On March 23, 2000 Dan Sisler and I recorded Kiss at the Oakland Coliseum. During the show, the band started to joke around about how they liked The Grateful Dead, and then they started singing Uncle John's Band. I uploaded an audio clip of it to my yousendit account. Check it out. It was hilarious and of course, the last thing we expected.

I haven't heard the clip you're referring to (is it still up?) but I came across this post after hearing (for the first time in years) "100,000 Years" by Kiss.
Do you think it may have been influenced a bit by "The Other One"?? (the early versions) Even the drum solo..

too funny...i've heard them speak of their disdain for the band, stating their the lack of theatrics and 'performance' was one of the main reasons they went so over the top with their stage show

It makes sense, in a way, that they'd admire the Dead. Another band with a kind of cult following -- only the GD didn't need to hide behind make up and lots of theatrical bullshit. I'm sure as they got older, and the total absurdity of their stage act became more ande more clear, they must have admired that the Dead could do it for so long and still take the stage in sweatpants and short-shorts.

The reason they may admire the GD is that Gene probably loves their business model. That guy would do anything for a buck
